Tokyo Disneyland

Heartfelt thoughts go out to those affected by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Seeing the videos online--yet being here in the US far removed from the devastation--it's difficult to imagine the depth of just what the Japanese people are going through. Still we can help by donating to the Red Cross in support of their recovery efforts. Also see nytimes.com and timeout.jp for other ways to assist.

The Walt Disney Company has made a $2.5 million donation to the Red Cross to support with emergency efforts there. Disney has also set up a charitable giving program for all of its employees around the world. The company is matching employee contributions up to $1 million US dollars.

Within Tokyo Disneyland itself, the earthquake caused some parking lot liquefaction and cracked pavement around the resort, but damage overall appears not too substantial. Many guests were stranded at the park on the first night as the surrounding city infrastructure was and still is in bad shape. The resort will remain closed until a decision can be made about operations.
