1938 Whitman "2 Large Puzzles In This Box"

Box image via Heritage Auctions.

This "2 Large Puzzles In This Box" set came with not one, but yes, two complete Snow White puzzles inside. The small print on the box reads: "Copyright 1938 By Walt Disney Enterprises, Hollywood, Calif. No. 3054, Made in U.S.A., Whitman Publishing Company." The box measure approximately 10.5" x 7.5" x 1"; 48 pieces per puzzle.

It's interesting to note that the cover illustration does not match either of the puzzles found inside. The first puzzle scene is of Snow White in an all yellow dress as she gathers a bouquet of wildflowers by the forest edge; the Huntsman looks on...

The second is one of the Dwarfs washing up before dinner...

Another "2 Large Puzzles In This Box" set was also produced. The small print on the box is identical to that above. This cover illustration for this one does represent one of the puzzles inside.

The first is of the "Silly Song" scene with Snow White clapping while the Dwarfs play music. The second is Snow White awakening to discover the Dwarfs in the room....

Both of these puzzle sets pop up from time to time on ebay and other online seller sites.

Playskool Snow White Puzzles

Playskool  has produced a large series of Disney puzzles over the years, including at least three from Snow White. These probably date from the mid 1970s, but I haven't actually found anyone who knows for sure. Each measures 11.5" x 9.5" and is made of thick, sturdy composite wood.

The Old Witch and Snow White, 20-piece puzzle. Series number 375-01.

Dopey with the others looking on, 9-piece. Series number 190-01.

The kiss goodbye, 8-piece. Series number 190-22. This one might date a little later than those above because it also reads "Ages 2 to 4 years." The other puzzles don't list an age level.

Special thanks to the Raymond Collection for information on these puzzles.

1993 Golden Puzzles

It was circa 1993 that Golden produced several Snow White puzzles to coincide with the re-release of the film. There are no dates on the boxes, but the style in which Snow White is illustrated, plus the "banner of dwarfs" seen along the side of the packaging help to pinpoint this time period.

These two 100-piece (actually 108 piece) puzzles measure 15" x 11.5" each. For ages 5 to 10.

The "Artist Series" and "Portrait Series" of Puzzles

Snow White has turned up in a couple of different sets of jigsaw puzzles manufactured by Mega Puzzles (a subsidiary of Mega Brands). The Artist Series is a suite of 1000-piece puzzles featuring various Disney characters in filmic scenes as reproduced in the contemporary fine art of commissioned artists. The works of two new artists are added to the series each year.

The second set is called the Portrait Series and consists of 500-piece puzzles. They differ from those above by paying tribute to the Disney characters in a stylized montage ensemble of both new and vintage artwork.

Disney Princess Jewels

The Disney marketing tactic of lumping all the princesses together into individual products has never held much allure for me. It seems somehow to lessen the appeal with a feeling of mass merchandising rather than a celebration of the particular characters.

Yet, the Princess Jewels line from circa 2009 had such a fresh take on the design of Snow White (and the others) that I don't want to overlook this series. The dresses were redrawn in the spirit of Mardi Gras with of course plenty of jewels.

In a couple of previous posts, we saw the Snow White composition used in the Disney Soda Fountain pin and the Ping tattoo. But there's more, lots more. With the release of the Princess Jewels came a flood of items into the market. Here's just a few:
