Look Mommie...Snow White is a Man!

In the spirit of Mardi Gras which will soon be upon us, let's check out a lesser known side to Snow White:

  • Treat-or-Treating at Halloween...

A good friend gave this photo to me. When he was in 6th grade, all the kids on his block were dressing up for Halloween as characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But when it came time for him to choose his costume, all the other parts had been taken. It was either go as the princess or miss out on the candy. He didn't hesitate for a second before putting on the dress .

  • And finally, dressing up for the Prince...

"Snow White Man" costume with a 42/44" chest size. Sold in the UK. Includes dress and wig. £21.95 (GBP).

Fan Art to Cosplay for Snow White Costume

Artist Claire Hummel, aka shoomlah, has created a series of impressive illustrations featuring the Disney princesses in historical dress. Her Snow White design, for instance, is set in 16th century Germany. She says on her deviantArt page, "I took a wide swath from about 1500-1530 to come up with something that still maintained the spirit of the original design...Honestly? I just wanted to draw those damn slashed sleeves. I want them SO BAD."

Claire says she receives requests from cosplayers asking permission to re-create her dress designs, though no one has ever sent her a photo of a finished dress...until now. Here's a glowing example from costumer Chibirinoa who made the outfit for Halloween this year.

Re-creating Hummel's illustrated design is an amazing feat in itself. Making it work in the real world is something else entirely. Yet Chibirinoa seems to have done just that. From her website...
Snood: The snood was one of the most annoying parts of this costume. It's made of a bunch of trim with hand sewn pearls between the diamonds and sewn down to bias tape with elastic strung through it. I'm wearing two wigs just to get the net full enough!

Bodice: The main part of the bodice is suede and has center panel embroidery that I did free motion on my machine. The gold on the sleeves was also embroidered with zig zag stitching to mimic the artwork. The rest of the fabrics are a loose weave boucle and a cotton eyelet. The back laces up with gold laces.

Skirt: the skirt is casa collection satin with the jacquard band and bias tape. The skirt had to have shoulder straps to keep it sitting high enough on my waist!

Muchas gracias to Hana Street for the notice on this.

Snow White Walks the Fringe

Considered the world's largest arts festival, The Fringe (short for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe) is held every August in Scotland's capital. Established in 1947, it attracts performing artists from around the world--in theater, comedy, dance and music.

Back in 2008, Snow White was spotted on The Fringe scene with another of her "fairytale friends".

More Annie Leibovitz Photos

Back in 2007-2008, photographer Annie Leibovitz was engaged by the Disney Company to shoot celebrities as traditional Disney characters for the Dream Portrait Series of advertisements. Yesterday the Disney Parks blog announced the addition of several new ads for 2011 featuring more of Leibovitz's unique photos.

One of the new images includes Olivia Wilde as Snow White's Evil Queen with Alec Baldwin as the Magic Mirror. The caption reads,"Where magic speaks, even when you’re not the fairest of them all."

Two more photos feature Penelope Cruz as Belle and Jeff Bridges as the prince from Beauty and the Beast and Queen Latifah as Ursula from The Little Mermaid.

All images copyright Disney.

Additional images from the series will be included as special inserts in the April issues of O – The Oprah Magazine, People En EspaƱol, Real Simple, Essence, and InStyle as well as the March 28 issue of People.

The Art of the Disney Princess in Photos

All images copyright 2009 Disney Editions (unless noted).

The Art of the Disney Princess (designed by Winnie Ho) is lavishly illustrated with over a 170 images of original artwork, the vast majority of which fall under the categories of digital media, pencil and ink drawings, or watercolor and oil paintings. Very few of the pieces are actual photos. Here's a look at the Snow Whites. Live model shot by photographer Ryan Astamendi, doll by Danielle Bedics.

Two shots by photographer Ryan Astamendi that were not included in the book: According to Astamendi, the Snow White model, Cyndi, is from Guatemala and is only about 5 feet tall. This posed a problem since the costume only came in adult sizes. Learn more about the shoot at his RyPhoto blog.

A second round featuring three more--including Rachel Weisz as Snow White--came out in October 2007. Four more were added January 2008 with one additional--Julianne Moore as the Little Mermaid--on April 25, 2008.
